Erika is a certified trainer and behavior consultant (CTBC), committed to positive reinforcement/force-free training. Before becoming a dog trainer, she started her own dog walking company where she specialized in walking reactive dogs in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has volunteered at shelters and assisted with various classes for puppies and adult dogs. She has a special spot in her heart for adolescent dogs and dogs that struggle with fear and anxiety. The greatest moments in dog training for her are when a fearful dog begins to trust her and when humans gain a greater understanding of their dogs. Erika’s journey started in 2002 when she adopted her first dogs on her own, two Black Lab mix littermates (yes, at the same time!), but her life went on a different path until many years later when she and her partner adopted a street dog from Taiwan who ended up having profound behavioral struggles. He was “that one dog” who put her back on the path to working with dogs and their humans. Because of her experience as the guardian of a profoundly fearful dog, she intimately understands the huge toll stress and fear can take on everyone. Erika focuses on behavioral wellness for dogs as well as supporting their humans through a variety of struggles, and she does this with empathy, patience, understanding, care, and fun. She loves her human clients as much as her canine clients. Her favorite thing to do is educate people about dog behavior and communication. In addition to becoming a certified SA Pro Trainer, Erika earned the CTBC designation at the rigorous Dog Training Internship Academy originally started by Janis Bradley. She has also taken classes through the Karen Pryor Academy, Trish King’s Academy of Dog Behavior, Susan G. Friedman, Ph.D.’s Living & Learning with Animals 3-day course, and is currently enrolled in Michael Shikashio’s Aggression in Dogs Master Course. A passionate reader with a degree in English literature from UC Berkeley, she’s traded novels for avid reading in the dog behavior field, continuing education to keep up with the latest canine science, as well as attending virtual and live conferences and seminars, and attending virtual webinars, workshops, and classes with top experts in the dog training and behavior field. Erika lives with her partner and daughter in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a dog mom to Mochi, 11-yr-old Min-Pin/Rat Terrier; Beck, 5-yr-old Border Collie; and Fiona, 4-yr-old Blue Heeler mix. “I look forward to hearing from you whether you live in the San Francisco Bay Area or across the globe!”

Toward the end of my career as a science teacher, I began studying to turn my lifelong doggy hobby into a new career. I qualified as a franchised Puppy School tutor, a Certified Trick Dog Instructor (CTDI), a scent dog tutor, and also as a Certified Animal Behaviourist (CAB). I then decided to specialise in the issue of separation anxiety due to the real suffering it can cause in both dogs and their owners. The SA Pro training has given me the tools to really help dogs get over their home-alone issues. Although currently based in Oxfordshire, I am a northerner with a straightforward attitude and a positive belief that with the right tools we can make a big difference. Before learning about this method, I found separation anxiety cases difficult, but now am pleased and excited about the difference that is made using this clever technique.
Christa began her career with animals as a veterinary technician. Distressed by the behaviour issues her clients sought help with, Christa shifted her focus to animal training, founding Zen Critter, LLC. Zen Critter strives to use the most up-to-date scientific principles, using positive reinforcement and force-free training methods. Christa’s achievements include graduating from the Karen Pryor Academy of Professional Dog Trainers and being recognized as a SA Pro Trainer. Understanding that separation anxiety is an emotionally draining and difficult condition for guardians and their companions, Christa feels that providing science-based, compassionate support is of utmost importance. This is why she avidly pursues continuing education and professional development by attending seminars and keeping current on industry literature. Zen Critter, LLC, puts clients and their companions first, and is well respected and referred to by local veterinarians. When not helping clients to enjoy easier lives with their companions, Christa enjoys competing in horse trials with her pony and camping with her husband and two dogs.

I’ve always had a passion for improving animal welfare by helping humans learning to train more effectively! I have conducted empirical research focused on the human/animal bond and its impact on both owners and pets during graduate school and my philosophy is that through better training and improved human/dog relationships, the number of animals relinquished to shelters will be significantly reduced! Since starting my professional career in dog training my interest has been in separation-related problem behaviors commonly known as separation anxiety. I offer fear-free separation anxiety training that focuses on pet communication, socialization, and science-based behavioral theory. In addition to be a SA Pro certified trainer, I am a certified professional dog trainer, a fear-free certified trainer, and an Elite Fear Free Certified Professional. I have many years of experience (in various capacities within the animal world, from a veterinary nurse to boarding manager, to certified dog trainer) in supporting pet owners making the needed changes in their pet’s habits. My passion and focus for the past three years have been learning all I can about canine separation anxiety-related behaviors. I have attended seminars in the subject matter and I have trained under the mentoring of one of the world’s leading experts in Separation Anxiety. I maintain my education up to date so I can provide the quality all dogs and owners deserve. My goal is to help as many owners and dogs as I can overcome the debilitating fear that makes home departures impossible and turns otherwise great dogs into fearful, unhappy dogs.
